Santa Cruz Auto Repair Done Right
Rene's Auto Repair brings honest, knowledgeable service to Santa Cruz drivers — with a 4.7-star rating and a shop known for going the extra mile.
What's it doing?
Pick the symptom. You'll get the same straight answer you'd get at the counter — likely cause, honest ballpark, and whether it can wait.
Ballparks are for common cases on common cars. Your written estimate comes before any work — always.
Pick what the car's doing and we'll tell you what it probably is — the same thing you'd get told over the counter.
The work
Brakes
Pads, rotors, calipers, lines. And the honest version: if your pads have 40% left, we'll tell you to come back in 10,000 miles.
Oil & fluids
Full-synthetic changes with a real look underneath — the stuff a quick-lube skips. We torque the drain plug and note what's coming due.
Diagnostics & check-engine
A code tells you the neighborhood, not the address. We test before we replace anything — that's the difference between a diagnosis and a guess.
Tires & alignment
Mount, balance, rotate, patch. Four-wheel alignments on the rack. We patch from the inside or we don't patch at all.
A/C & heat
Evac, recharge, UV dye test. If it's a leak, you get the estimate before we open the system — not after.
Batteries & electrical
Free battery and charging-system test. Starters, alternators, parasitic drains, and that one fuse that keeps blowing.
Scheduled maintenance
Everything in your factory book at 30/60/90k. Keeps your warranty valid — no dealership required, and no dealership prices.
Pre-purchase & smog
Certified smog station. Buying used? A pre-purchase inspection is the cheapest insurance there is — we've talked people out of plenty of cars.
How we keep it honest
Every mechanic says "trust us." Fine. Here's the specific, written-down version — the stuff you can hold us to.
If we ever get one of these wrong, tell the owner. He's here six days a week and it will ruin his morning, which is exactly the point.
Come see where your car goes

Opened the shop with two bays and his brother's toolbox. Still answers the phone himself most mornings.
The voice on the phone. Translates tech-speak into English and makes the call before any number changes.
Diagnostics and drivability. The one other shops call when they're stuck on an electrical gremlin.
If it stops, steers, or rides wrong, it's his bay. Torque-wrench-and-checklist type. We like that type.
Runs the smog lane and the espresso machine in the waiting room. Both are calibrated.
From the counter
“My car failed smog at Holiday and I took it to Rene to get the codes fixed. He helped me understand and executed doing only the bare minimum - a valve replacement. When I didn’t pick up the phone while at work he did me the favor of driving it back to Holiday to redeem their fail smog and get a free”
“In town for a couple days and had some issues on the old van.. luckily Rene’s shop was open later than others and he got us taken care of the next morning! Clean shop, Professional, Knowledgable and Accommodating!”
“Completely overcharged me then realized he was and took $100 off. Felt totally scammed will not return and will let everyone know of my experience. Said he had pictures I asked to see pictures and it could’ve been anyone’s tire./wheel. Said he had video he would show me, he had no video. Became loud”
